Australia’s incredible diversity of experiences is reflected in the vast array of unique city experiences. Superyachts have the opportunity to be placed right in the heart of the action, with each major city having its own compelling reason to visit.

Series 1 Episode 4, Iconic City Thrills, focuses on the Harbour cities of Sydney and Melbourne. With the insight of superyacht captains and leading stakeholders from the tourism and superyacht industries, we delve into what makes these two cities such enticing destinations to visit by yacht.

“Every city, no matter where you are in the world, has its own unique offering,” explains Ian Malouf, Managing Director of Ahoy Club. “Australia is no different, it just has many cities. Everything has got different aspects to offer. Whether it’s food or wine, Australia is so well known for its quality produce.

“But there’s plenty of add-ons too, getting off the yacht for a day, whether you jump on a helicopter and go somewhere. Some cities offer adventure, some offer food and culture. But Australia has the lot and that’s why it’s such a great destination.”

The backdrop of Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge has already made the capital of New South Wales an iconic cruising destination. With premium central berths at both Jones Bay Wharf and Sydney Superyacht Marina, yachts are immediately immersed in the city’s highlights.

The New Year’s Eve fireworks are certainly a bucket list item, but there is also plenty to explore throughout the region.

“There’s no city I know of where you can pretty much anchor everywhere, you can swim anywhere, and still get that backdrop of a metropolitan city,” says Matt Stafford, Captain of M/Y Perle Bleue.

Beyond the Harbour, the Pittwater and Broken Bay area to the north provides adventurous cruising just a short distance from the CBD. Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay (RMYCBB) has become the home for superyachts eager to explore this region of pristine natural beauty.

“It’s a totally different waterway to Sydney Harbour,” shares Jayson McDonald, CEO of RMYCBB. “The Northern Beaches or Pittwater area is unique. The accessibility of being so close to Sydney is great, yet so far away in terms of the natural beauty.

“Depending on what your vessel is capable of, you can do everything from waterskiing, estuary fishing, to snorkelling, diving and parasailing. You name it. You could be standing under a waterfall during the day and then have a nice romantic dinner at one of the local restaurants or in a bay.”

Melbourne is Australia’s sporting, arts and events capital, renowned for hosting major events that draw visitors throughout the year. From the F1 to the Australian Open and Melbourne Cup, these events are all within easy access from the centrally located Melbourne Superyacht Marina.

“Melbourne is a fantastic waterfront city and we are a city based around experiences,” says Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp. “We love that sense of discovery, but we also really like to share experiences with others.

“We’ve set ourselves up to be able to provide exemplary services and experiences for superyachts, both for crews and for guests. Everything is on your doorstep here in Melbourne. You can access a fantastic marina, but it’s really beyond that which is almost limitless in terms of opportunities.”

Australia’s coastal cities act as gateways for superyachts to access the country’s most adventurous and rewarding cruising grounds. Whether you’re exploring the Great Barrier Reef, Kimberleys, or Tasmania, city luxuries are never far away.

In the next episode of Australia InDepth series 1, our city escapades continue as we visit South East Queensland’s yachting hubs – Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
