Iddes Yachts Reveals First Full-Electric Sail 55

By Emily Dawkins

From the creators of the revolutionary concepts, Earth 300 and Class 55, Spanish yacht design and naval architect studio Iddes Yachts has revealed an exciting new sustainable superyacht concept for 2022: 55m Sail 55.

Combining magnificent seakeeping with its innovative approach, the Sail 55 is the studio’s first full-electric sustainable sail yacht concept. With the capacity to travel the globe, this new design features a series of cleverly engineered solutions to several common sailing problems including sail-handling, power generation and tender storage.

For Iddes Yachts, producing a superyacht with the ability to perform consistently well during several months at sea, as well as providing a comfortable and safe cruising experience for adventures further afield, was key to its inspiration behind the Sail 55 concept.

One of the most impressive qualities of this new design is the fusion of a 500 GT motor yacht’s capabilities into a 500 GT sailing yacht. The Sail 55 offers a magnificent approach to a unique hybrid sail design, providing motor capabilities with minimum fuel usage. Her optimised fuel-electric installation, hydro-solar energy recovering systems and large battery storage make this yacht truly innovative in the sustainable yachting field.

Sail 55's sizable length allows for a practical stern design, providing under-deck storage for a large tender and vehicle, with easy access to the water without the need for complex hydraulics. Her rig design has also been carefully created, providing the ability to travel during all weather conditions without the need to reduce her sails. Accommodating up to 12 guests across six VIP cabins, Sail 55’s interior offers a flexible layout tailored to the owner’s needs and requirements.

Throughout the design process, Iddes Yachts wanted to maintain a sleek, attractive profile whilst ensuring remarkable visibility from the yacht's main deckhouse, and it has certainly achieved just that. Providing panoramic views without interruption from the deck or capping rail, the Sail 55 is one of the Spanish studio’s most impressive concepts yet.

"This is possibly the most capable ocean-going superyacht below 500GT now designed. A superyacht worthy to embark on any voyage."
