Inside FM Architettura’s Interior Refit of 59.4m OASIS

By George Bains

FM Architettura’s interior refit of the 59.4m Lurssen superyacht Oasis has reaffirmed the studio’s prowess in delivering cutting-edge design for many of the most prestigious superyachts in the world. The award-winning project sets a new standard in lifestyle trends, the fruit of expert craftsmanship and creative design.

Co-founded by architect and superyacht interior designer Francesca Muzio in 2010, FM Architettura is a pillar of exquisite ‘Made in Italy’ design. Based in Ancona, the studio is at the epicentre of Italian craftsmanship, working with more than 200 local artisans who are the finest in the country for their work with leather, glass, timber, metals and textiles. The design team at FM Architettura harness all of these specialised elements into their interior design projects and custom furniture.

Oasis, originally delivered by Lurssen in 2006, is one project to have recently benefitted from the magnificent capabilities of FM Architettura. The brief given to the Italian studio was to transform this timeless yacht into a family retreat, providing a home for all generations to gather and enjoy a wonderful lifestyle at sea.

Every space, therefore, needed to be reinterpreted into multi-purpose areas without making changes to the structure of the yacht. A pure interior rejuvenation. The complete interior refit was needed not just for the aesthetic purposed, but to adapt the superyacht to a new functionality. The Owner wanted to be able to spend more time at sea with a large group of family and friends, with each individual being allowed their own comfortable private space.

Designed and project-managed by FM Architettura, with the collaboration of the Captain and crew, work began on the two-stage operation in March 2018 and, despite the complexity of this project, Oasis was delivered on time and on-budget in April 2019. Notably, there was no involvement of a shipyard in this process.

It is not just the detailed execution and quick turnaround that has made this project such a success. The resulting transformation has perfectly encapsulated the Owner’s vision and desire.

Oasis is now a phenomenal superyacht for guest entertainment, boasting an incredible array of amenities for ensemble activities and quiet luxury.

The sun deck has been remodelled for hosting different activities according to the hours of the day. A spa pool and sunbathing provide a great setting for days spent indulging under the sun, while a cinema area is primed for watching films by starlight. The sun deck also now has a gym and a large dining area for shared family meals. All of these areas have been carefully planned for having a space dedicated to each one of the family’s favourite activities on board, making this a truly bespoke superyacht.

Since the launch of Oasis in 2006, lifestyle demands onboard superyachts have evolved considerably. This is something that FM Architettura took into consideration when going into the project, with features such as near-charging facilities on every table incorporated into the design.

The colour scheme for the interiors has been kept deliberately neutral, with a restful background of wood and darker tone decorations to play out, highlighting shapes and lines. Francesca Muzio selected new upholstering materials to transmit a timeless elegance. By covering briarwood walls and furniture with ivory hammered leather and soft brown suede, the original design became airier and more contemporary to give the yacht a sophisticated ambience.

“I’m always inspired by people, because spaces are very personal, especially when we talk about superyachts” explains FM Architettura Co-Founder, Francesca Muzio. “In this case, the adventure was to combine the lifestyle of three generations in one boat, transforming Oasis into a new living experience.”

The Owner’s individual tastes are reflected in the dark metal artworks which highlight the focal points of the lobby and dining area.

“As humans, we have an emotional response to space through touch,” continues Muzio. “Our eyes are well trained, and we can see a space may look luxurious, but only when those textures are carefully integrated into the space.

FM Architettura may work heavily with specialised local artisans, but the studio’s reputation for boundary-breaking, opulent designs is renowned all across the globe. Oasis is another example of a delicate bespoke project that has been finely executed by the Ancona firm, and there is much more to expect in the near future. FM Architettura continues to work on outstanding superyacht projects, including 282m NJORD.
