IRIS BLUE: Heesen’s First Delivery of 2024

By Frances Flannagan

Following several intensive tests in the North Sea, Heesen has announced the delivery of YN 20255, now named IRIS BLUE. She is the Dutch yard’s first delivery of 2024, as well as the first yacht of the restyled 55m series, boasting a number of revisions that elevate both her exterior design and interior layout.

IRIS BLUE features exterior styling by Omega Architects and interiors by Luca Dini Design & Architecture with a new, six-cabin layout. She can reach a maximum speed of 15.5 knots and has a transatlantic range of 4,500 nm at 13 knots.

Her three-day sea trials saw IRIS BLUE meeting all required specifications, and the tests were conducted smoothly and according to plans. She was tested in rough sea conditions on the second day, with waves up to 1.7m and gusts of wind up to 28 knots; however, she proved to be highly responsive, accepting steering commands immediately just like her foresisters. This is made possible by her large rudders in conjunction with a powerful steering unit, combined with the high pitch of the propellers.

Omega Architects revised the exterior lines of the series, resulting in a more assertive stance on the water. Designer & Architect Frank Laupman commented: ‘As much as we love our original design with the vertical windows, we felt it was time to make an evolutionary step... We opted for a larger expanse of floor-to-ceiling glass, without mullions in the main saloon. Then, we took the opportunity to give a slightly more aggressive look to the profile by using continuous sheets of tinted glass. The horizontal lines stretch the optical length and balance the air draft. The result is beautiful: we retained the family look and feel but gave it an elegant touch.’

One transformative innovation of IRIS BLUE’s layout is the Owner’s quarters, which now feature a veranda on the starboard side. This unique restyling significantly changes the experience of the 78sqm stateroom, with walk-in wardrobes and access to an outdoor area in complete privacy being welcome additions to her design.

She features a larger sundeck with a bar around the whirlpool forward, and her central atrium of the main deck has been modernised, now featuring a wider and revised main staircase. An additional companionway from the wheelhouse up to the sundeck has been included, allowing for easier crew access to elevate the guest experience onboard.

Niels Vaessen, Heesen CEO, commented: ‘Heesen 55-metre Steel is a unique and very competitive design. We believe in this proven design platform and have worked with Omega and Luca Dini on creating a yacht that meets the refined tastes of clients who appreciate Dutch quality with a shortened delivery time. Iris Blue is a wonderful addition to our fleet, and we wish the Owners and her crew many days of happy sailing.’
