Lateral Naval Architects’ Energy Transition Platform Gains ABS Approval in Principle

By Frances Flannagan

Lateral Naval Architects has successfully secured Approval in Principle from ABS for its Energy Transition Platform. This solution is an innovative response to the changing technological and environmental climate, and will greatly benefit the future-proofing of yachts.

Within the yachting industry, the matter of future-proofing vessels will become increasingly more important as technology continues to advance in alignment with energy transition and the pursuit of net-zero. To achieve net-zero targets, it is highly likely that the technical solutions behind the process will take many forms, utilising a diverse mix of solutions.

The Southampton based firm Lateral Naval Architects have responded to this challenge by conceiving and engineering the Energy Transition Platform (ETP), a platform that provides a technical solution to allow for a phased transition from diesel-based fuels to methanol in a pre-engineered design that can protect against future outcomes.

Lateral has worked closely with ABS to understand the most effective methods of compliance, as it has been acknowledged that a vital step in the development of the ETP has been adopting regulatory compliance and methodologies into the heart of the design.

Following submission of the technical architecture of the ETP for ABS to approve, Lateral has received Approval in Principle (AiP) for feasibility of the core naval architecture and engineering systems of the ETP.

Simon Brealy, Chief Mechanical Engineer at Lateral, commented: ‘Achieving AiP for our flexible methanol-ready platform is a very important first step in the journey to provide our clients with solutions and practical answers to the future. As naval architects and engineers we are excited by the challenges of the energy transition and the ETP is a great example of our ongoing work to push to net zero.’

Daniele Bottino, ABS Manager, Business Development, Yacht Sector Lead, has expressed ABS’ excitement at collaborating on such a solution: ‘ABS is proud to collaborate with forward-looking companies like Lateral Naval Architects who continuously explore and promote innovative solutions for their clients. This superyacht promises to capitalize on the experience gained from commercial vessels utilizing methanol to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.’

Gaining ABS Approval in Principle is the first step for ETP to begin the innovative work necessary for positive environmental change. Lateral Naval Architects has created a solution that will greatly assist in the future-proofing of yachts, a topic which is more relevant than ever, recognised by ABS as they embark on what is bound to be a harmonious collaboration.
