Lürssen’s Legacy at 150 Years: A Commemorative Journey Through Innovation and Iconic Yachts

By Sophia Spanton

This 2025, Lürssen marks 150 years since its founding by Friedrich Lürssen in Bremen, Germany. Over a century and a half, the shipyard has become a benchmark for innovation and craftsmanship in global yacht building, shaping not just vessels but the industry’s standards and culture.

From humble beginnings, Lürssen’s journey has been defined by a pioneering spirit and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Founded in 1875 by a 24-year-old Friedrich Lürssen, the company quickly gained a reputation for exquisitely crafted rowboats and, in 1886, built the world’s first motorboat in partnership with Gottlieb Daimler, a technical leap that set the tone for the company’s future. Through the twentieth century, Lürssen expanded its expertise, producing everything from racing boats to naval vessels, and later, some of the most advanced luxury yachts in the world.

We at Superyachts.com wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Lürssen for their humble support and partnership from the very beginning. It is always a pleasure to work with a shipyard whose values of quality, innovation, and integrity are matched only by their generosity and collaborative spirit. As Lürssen looks ahead to a visionary future, we look forward to continuing this rewarding relationship, celebrating their achievements and supporting their journey for many years to come.

Family ownership is a cornerstone of Lürssen’s enduring success. Now in its fourth generation, the company is still managed by the Lürssen family, who have maintained a focus on long-term vision rather than short-term trends. This stability has allowed the shipyard to cultivate enduring relationships with designers, naval architects, and clients, many of whom return for multiple projects.

Lürssen’s facilities in Bremen, Lemwerder, Berne, and Rendsburg are among the most advanced in Europe, supporting both new builds and refits. The shipyard employs thousands of specialists, from welders and engineers to interior craftsmen, whose skills are passed down through apprenticeships and training programmes; a culture of expertise reflected in the yard’s reputation for quality and attention to detail.

Beyond technical achievement, Lürssen has played a significant role in shaping the image of the modern superyacht. Collaborations with leading designers have produced vessels that are not only feats of engineering but also statements of style and ambition. Lürssen yachts are known for their individuality, with each project tailored to the owner’s vision and lifestyle.

As Lürssen celebrates its sesquicentennial, the shipyard stands as a symbol of continuity and progress in the maritime world. Its legacy is defined not only by the record-breaking yachts it has delivered, such as AZZAM, DILBAR, and OCTOPUS, but by its ongoing influence on the craft, culture, and future of superyachting.

'We don’t set out to build the biggest yachts; we set out to build the best yacht for each client. Clients choose us for our engineering excellence, our ability to think outside the box, and our determination to fulfil their wishes, no matter how unreachable they may seem,' says Peter Lürssen.

As Lürssen celebrates 150 years of shipbuilding, Superyachts.com is proud to honour their legacy and ongoing influence on the craft, culture, and future of superyachting.
