Lürssen's Legacy: COSMOS and Her Fresh Perspective on Ocean Adventure
In a moment destined to be remembered as a milestone in modern yacht building, Lürssen unveiled COSMOS: a ground breaking 114.2 metre superyacht that dares to tear up the rulebook of luxury at sea. It is not only one of the largest yachts to grace the water this year, but also one of the most striking and visionary in recent memory.
With an exterior and interior conceived entirely by renowned designer Marc Newson, COSMOS is set to redefine what an expedition capable superyacht can be. Her sleek, sculptural form, paired with futuristic detailing, brings a daringly fresh language to yacht design; one that blends elegance and innovation with an unmistakably bold energy.
'This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary,' says Peter Lürssen. 'While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.'
Commissioned by a forward-thinking owner with a desire to see, and experience, the world in a truly unique way, COSMOS is not a yacht to follow trends. She is built for exploration, for crossing oceans, and for reaching the world’s most remote destinations in unparalleled style.
From her overall silhouette to the smallest interior detail, Newson had complete creative freedom, which is a rare luxury that led to a seamless unity between inside and out. 'We have, therefore, been able to exploit and explore every creative possibility uninhibited.,' Newson explains. 'This liberating free rein afforded the project a joyful, organic evolution, one which resulted in a satisfying novelty and coherence...'
Among COSMOS’s most dramatic features is the glass-domed private owner’s study, an exciting first in yachting. Perched high above the decks and linked to a personal sky terrace, it commands uninterrupted 360-degree views thanks to a feat of advanced glass engineering unique to Lürssen. The glasswork is perfectly curved, crystal clear, and utterly immersive, turning the owner’s workspace into a floating observatory.
Glass plays a starring role throughout the yacht’s design. The entire upper level is wrapped in a continuous glass band, creating a visual connection to the sea and sky from every vantage point. Beneath the helipad, lies a glazed observation lounge, a place to witness nature at its most dramatic.
COSMOS is as capable as she is beautiful. Engineered for long-range adventures, she spans six decks and is built to Ice Class 1D, allowing her to traverse light ice conditions and comfortably explore all five oceans and all seven continents. The open aft deck is a study in purposeful luxury, hosting a pool and Jacuzzi combination with generous seating, while a concealed dry dock houses her largest tender, launched via an advanced sledge system.
In keeping with the owner’s forward-thinking philosophy, COSMOS is also a testbed for sustainable marine innovation. She incorporates a pioneering methanol fuel cell installation, a complex system that converts methanol into hydrogen before generating electricity. This emerging technology could lead the industry towards greener superyacht travel.
In her size, her creative boldness, and her technical innovation, COSMOS is a defining statement for Lürssen in its 150th anniversary year. She is not just a yacht, but a manifesto for the future of private exploration: powerful, beautiful, and unafraid to push beyond the known horizon.
"'Working with an immensely creative client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries...'"
