Lürssen’s Legacy in Exploration: Charting a Course of Excellence

By Nora Hart

As Lürssen celebrates its 150th anniversary, the German shipyard is not only marking a century and a half of engineering excellence, but also reaffirming their position as a pioneer in the growing world of explorer yachts. In an era where ultra-luxury meets global adventure, Lürssen has become synonymous with vessels that are as capable as they are refined.

The company’s spirit of innovation dates back to 1886 with REMS, the world’s first motorboat, and has continued uninterrupted into the 21st century. One of Lürssen’s most significant contributions to modern yachting is the development of the explorer yacht; a vessel purpose-built for endurance, autonomy, and travel to the world’s most remote waters.

The 126.2-metre OCTOPUS, delivered in 2003, was a game-changer. Widely considered the first fully-fledged explorer yacht, she features twin helipads, a hangar, a 20-metre guest tender, two submarines, and onboard aviation and refuelling facilities. Designed by Espen Øino and equipped for months at sea, OCTOPUS demonstrated that exploration and luxury could coexist without compromise.

Since then, Lürssen has continued to push boundaries. The 107-metre SHACKLETON, further advances the capabilities of next-generation expedition yachts. Meanwhile, the 114-metre COSMOS represents a breakthrough in sustainable cruising, featuring a methanol-powered fuel cell system that will allow the yacht to operate emission-free at anchor for up to 15 days or cruise 1,000 nautical miles at low speed.

Even vessels like NORD, though styled with immense opulence, are equipped for true expedition, with features such as a retractable hangar helipad for a Leonardo AW139 helicopter, and systems that enable global range and independence.

As more owners seek freedom to explore the farthest reaches of the ocean while maintaining the highest standards of design and comfort, Lürssen continues to lead the way. These are not just yachts, but they are self-sufficient platforms for discovery, seamlessly blending advanced technology, naval architecture, and uncompromising luxury.
