Moonflower 72: Keel Laid of 72m Nauta Designed Wider SY

By Emily Dawkins

Italian shipyard Wider has laid the keel of its full-custom Moonflower 72 superyacht project at an exclusive ceremony in Porto Marghera, Venice. Penned by Italian design studio Nauta Design, the 72m hybrid yacht will be the first custom new build for the yard following recapitalisation under Marcello Maggi and W-Fin Sarl.

Featuring a clean, uncluttered design with iconic design characteristics of Nauta Design, and home to the trademark hybrid propulsion system of Wider, Moonflower 72 is the result of an impressive collaboration between two recognised Italian brands.

Following the announcement of her in-build status at the end of May, the first step in Moonflower 72’s construction process commenced at a lavish ceremony at the yard’s new Venice facilities where the first steel was cut and the keel was laid. With the Wider headquarters located in Ancona, and operations based at a new facility in Fano, the new Porto Marghera location was selected by the new holding company W-Fin Sarl due to its prime Italian location.

Marcello Maggi, Head of W-Fin Sarl, the new owners of Wider, commented on the decision to choose Venice for Wider's new build facilities: ‘Venice, a world icon for its artistic beauty and its lagoon, but at the same time with a rich maritime and shipbuilding tradition, has always fascinated me. We chose the production terminal in Porto Marghera precisely because this district contains all the characteristics we were looking for: on the one hand suitable spaces and strong skills matured over decades of activity in metal working; on the other hand the cultural and artistic allure of Venice. All sealed by our experience in yacht building. We have all the elements to be sure of building a highly technological product.’

Boasting, ‘balanced proportions, seamless outdoor/indoor connections and the extensive use of glass add visual lightness and grace’, Moonflower 72 is a stunning new superyacht to come from the Italian design studio of Nauta Design. A notable highlight of the 72m's design is Nauta’s patented ‘The Island’ feature, which offers guests an expanding aft deck come beach club that provides a luxurious walk-around space for freedom of walking onboard.

Not only equipped with the latest hybrid propulsion system from Wider, Moonflower 72 will also see new innovations and technologies from the yard, such as the recovery of heat energy from the propulsion system, all in an effort to encourage harmony with the sea and the environment onboard.

Scheduled for delivery in 2025, we can’t wait to see how Moonflower 72 evolves into a Wider x Nauta Design masterpiece.
