MYS 2021: Driving Change with Winch Design
Joined by CEO of Winch Design Aino-Leena Grapin, Superyachts.com discussed the role of designers in the transition towards a sustainable future, the design house's exciting 35th anniversary, and the larger than life 222-metre project that will be set to take on ocean research like no other.
With sustainability being in the very DNA of the company Winch Design, the innovators are no stranger to the imiment action needed to take on the climate emergency. Having pioneered alongside Blue Marine Foundation in the London to Monaco Bike Ride, and having been responsible for more eco-initatives in-house than almost any other design house, Winch Design had plenty to share. "What we have to do is seize this moment, the whole industry together" said Aino. "The risk is also just to pay lip service to it, so we have to now convert that into action and true innovation."
However, a project signed this year, creating both excitement and intrigue is the 222m SOMNIO. With multifaceted use, one being ocean research we wanted to know what the extensive role of Winch Design would be, as well as how it feels to be a part of such a monumental project. "It's a big one for sure!" says the CEO. "We have designed the exterior and some interior spaces. [...] We are very excited about this project because it is the largest superyacht in the world."
In the realm of new projects and new initiatives in the sphere of sustainability, it seems Winch Design are focussed, as always, on making a difference both in big and small ways. "What you will see from Winch Design is more thinking around the science behind sustainabiltiy" Aino-Leena Grapin shares. "What you won't see from Winch Design are empty statements of eco-concepts, greeenwashing".
"What we have to do is seize this moment, the whole industry together."
