MYS 2021: Espen Oeino Designing the Future

By Christina Tsangaris

Joining Superyachts.com for an exclusive interview is Espen Oeino, Founder of Espen Oeino and innovative creative behind some of the most iconic vessels on the water today. We discuss the role of sustainability to him as a design house, the creativity that comes with the shift within a pandemic, and the exciting creations we can expect to see hit the water.

With Espen Oeino a leading name across the industry, it was only natural it would peak our interest to understand how a global pandemic would effect the creative process, his client interaction and the output of one of the most unforgettable years in history. "We adapted like everyone" shares Espen. "Its been a good year and a half of full or partcial remote working".

Having been a part of two iconic vessels related to the shift towards sustainability, it seems clear that the trantition towards net-zero and the role of a designer, requires a commitment to change. "The leading designers and naval architects in the industry are committing to at least one project per year [...] projects where the objective is to reduce the carbon footprint in our industry".

Ocean research projects such as REV are an exciting example of this, both incredibly different but equally as revolutionary. "The objective is to see what we can do to reduce the carbon footprint in our industry" shares the designer. Tthese vessels reflect the sustainable purpose of the Espen Oeino company, both in philanthropic aspects, and ocean research.

There is plenty to look forward to with smaller yachts still in demand, and plenty more left to be accomplished. "We are associated mostly with large yachts but we also do a lot of small boats" says Espen. "We have another one that will go into production early next year, we have just finished all the design and engineering work on it".
