MYS 2021: Meridian 5G on the Power of Connection

By Freya Cottrell

Joined by Dasha Grupman, Co-Founder & CEO of Meridian 5G, we discussed the role of technology in a post-COVID world, the vision for the technology company and how internet onboard yachts will continue to revolutionise in new and exciting ways.

With COVID-19 and the restrictions around person-to-person contact being an undeniable shift in culture and communication, Meridian 5G's role is monumental. We asked the company how Meridian 5G is revolutionising the way guests use technology onboard: "The main thing we do is making sure that our superyacht clients have a very fast and reliable internet connection onboard. In other words, we enable our clients to be able to work onboard." shares Dasha Grupman. "In fact, many yacht owners and guests still get surprised when we tell them they can have the same internet speed onboard their yacht as they have in the office. And the way we make that happen is by delivering superyacht-specific 4G and 5G equipment that we develop and manufacture."

When it comes to internet on board, the opportunities for Meridian 5G are endless. "The very first thing we address is extending 4G, 5G coverage offshore up to 100km, which is roughly 60 nautical miles." he Co-founder & CEO shares. "A yacht can literally cross from Florida to the Bahamas without loosing 4G connection. It first picks up signal from the tower in Florida and as it approaches the Bahamas it picks up signal from that shore, having no interruption in between."

When it comes to high-speed internet access onboard Dasha shared with us the most important information that yacht owners and captains should know about the Meridian-5G service: "Well, in order to achieve fast and reliable internet you need both - good equipment and a good SIM data contract. One can’t work without the other, and the quality of SIM data is very important." the CEO shared. "Not only you need SIM cards that work on roaming without getting throttled, you also want to have SIM cards that can work like native on multiple networks within one country. For example, imagine you are in France. Some areas will have better coverage on Orange network, some on SFR, some on Bouygues. And and if your card is bound only to one carrier your internet connection would suffer. So in addition to equipment, we provide such SIM data contracts that utilize virtual SIM technology and ensure you get the best coverage on any network you have available."

The demand for this spectacular service is sky-high, with fast internet access being a great selling point for potential owners: "As you know, we’ve been in business for over 5 years now and in the last 2 years our client base grew from 150 yachts to close to 500." Dasha divulges. "And If in the earlier days having solid internet connection was a luxury that only larger yachts with large budgets could enjoy, today we have clients that range from 20 meters to 150+ meters. We provide internet to yachts like Eclipse, Radiant, Musashi, Kaos, Luna, Barbara, Lady Moura, Elysian and many more."

"We extend our coverage from shore up to 100 km which is roughly 60 miles [...] which means that the yacht is completely covered at all times when the guests are onboard."
