MYS 2021: Tailored Designs with Hot Lab

By Christina Tsangaris

Antonio Romano & Enrico Lumini, Partners of Hot Lab Design joined us at our studio in Monaco to update us on the company's progress from design studio to architectural studio. We also discussed the company's engaging future projects and how the pandemic has effected superyacht design.

Hot Lab was founded in 2004 with its roots firmly in yacht design, but in 2019 the innovative company took a step forward and moved from a design studio to an architectural studio. We asked the company's Partners what that leap meant to the business and what impact it has had on its design philosophy: "From a design studio we moved to an architectual studio and we started to take much more care about the proportions of the vessel not just aesthetically." They shared. "It has moved from designing an object to designing a moving object [...] which meant for us, cleaning up lines and creating something which was not following the trends."

Historically, the impact of global events can be seen throughout the design industry; with the previous year being one of the most monumental global events in our lifetimes, we were curious to ask the design studio whether there is evidence of the pandemic emerging in the latest yacht design trends: "As an emotional reaction to what happened last year, we have many clients wanting to spend much more time onboard [...]  so obviously you need a new approach on the design. So definitely trends are following that feeling." they shared.

Distinctive design is a speciality of Hot Lab and with every design tailored to the client's individual needs, Hot Lab ensure that there is always an aspect of the design that is unique to the studio: "You can recognise us both on the exterior and the interior for being extremely detailed [...]  You can feel the same type of feeling and the same kind of approach on all of our yachts."

Despite the recent leaps forward for the studio, they don't seem to have plans to slow down anytime soon. Spread across Europe with projects in Italy, Turkey, and the Netherlands, Antonio & Enrico shared with us a little bit about what the future holds for Hot Lab: "We have seven yachts in build at the moment [...]  and there are two more that are coming."

"You can recognise us both on the exterior and the interior for being extremely detailed [...]  You can feel the same type of feeling and the same kind of approach on all of our yachts."
