MYS 2022: Innovation Driving Design at Dixon Yacht Design
Joining Shari Liu in the interview studio for the first time was Dixon Yacht Design Founder and Managing Director, Bill Dixon. On the second day of the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, we heard more about the British design and naval architecture firm’s extensive portfolio and its move to create both innovative and sustainable yachts.
With over 40 years of experience in cutting-edge design, Founder and Managing Director of Dixon Yacht Design, Bill Dixon shared how the firm has gone from strength to strength over the years: ‘we’ve evolved over many years and really diversified in our portfolio.’
Initially gaining experience in production yachts, and soon moving towards the custom superyacht market, the Managing Director told Shari Liu that, ‘our portfolio gets more diverse by the year! We have experience across a wide spectrum of design, including naval architecture.’
Not only renowned for its production vessels and custom designs, the firm has also been focusing on the sailing and catamaran market due to its sustainable benefits. ‘We’re really looking and conceptualising larger catamarans, both power and sail, because of the factors of efficiency.’
‘We’re always challenged with our designs and we have to innovate, and that's the key to this,’ added Bill Dixon, when asked about the firm’s approach to yacht design, ‘we’re very open to innovation in design which I think is really key.’
‘Design ultimately is about innovating. Everything you do in design, you use the knowledge that you already have and you take it forward’; something extremely evident in Dixon Yacht Design’s new 100m sailing yacht project, Project Geno, which has been created in anticipation of the future of the superyacht market.
With the start of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show looming, Dixon shared what’s next for the firm: ‘we have a 72ft production motor boat coming out this FLIBS, and a couple of relatively large power and sailing catamarans as well as semi-displacement motor yachts.’
"Design is ultimately about innovating. Everything you do in design, you use the knowledge that you already have and you take it forward."
