MYS 2022: Oceanco on Building Future-Proof Yachts

By Emily Dawkins

Returning to the studio this year is Oceanco’s Group Marketing Director, Paris Baloumis. On the first day of the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, we discuss the Dutch shipyard’s busy year, with particular attention paid to the launch of the future-proof 117m INFINITY: both Oceanco’s, and the Netherlands’ largest built yacht.

‘There’s never a dull moment’, commented Group Marketing Director Paris Baloumis, ‘this year has been quite a busy year particularly in terms of new builds.’

A milestone for Oceanco this year is the launch of 117m INFINITY. With seven sweeping decks, Baloumis told us how, ‘comfort onboard was the number one priority’, alongside, ‘a lot of focus in particular on hydro-dynamics and hull efficiency.’

Despite her sheer size, INFINITY is only one of the many launches that Oceanco has successfully completed this year. With the other impressive builds remaining tightly under wraps, the Group Marketing Director told us how the yard welcomed the iconic 82m ALFA NERO back for a refit this year, alongside a 20-year-old Oceanco who underwent a complete rebuild.

Discussing sustainability, Baloumis believes that it is a group approach in the industry that will transform superyachts’ impact: ‘We as Oceanco like to be on the forefront when it comes to pioneering and being an industry leader, but we definitely don't want to do that alone: we need to do that together as an industry.’

‘How can we build our yachts today without making drastic changes down the road, and how can we make our yachts future-proof?’ added the Marketing Director. With a focus on a circular economy and holistic approach to sustainability, the yard’s efforts are certainly pioneering.

Not only future-proofing its yachts in terms of new builds, Oceanco’s recent launch into the NFT universe is something truly significant for the direction of yachting: ‘it sits very close to us - the ethos of doing new things and pioneering - that's a world we didn't know but we realised it's going to touch our lives and we thought let's get into it.’

With this in mind, we can't wait to see what will leave the Dutch yard next.
