MYS 2022: Tony Castro on The Golden Age of Yachting

By Heather Collier

Joined by Shari Liu, Superyachts.com had the pleasure of welcoming world-renowned yacht designer Tony Castro to our interview studio.

Tony Castro is a world-class designer who has a lifetime of experience. Despite working for over four decades in the superyacht industry, this was Castro's first time attending the Monaco Yacht Show show as an exhibitor.

Castro goes into depth about what he has learnt throughout the "golden age" of yachting, and what must be done in order for his designs to stay current.

"You have to reinvent yourself every so often. You have to be alert about what's going on in the industry and to have the enthusiasm to keep going."

Reinvention can go a long way, but so can establishing a strong, trustworthy relationship with clients. Castro recalls how he has made friends with many of his clients throughout the years, and how to listen to their needs effectively during the design process.

"My desire has always been to solve things, finding the solution to something. That's my motivation. I tend to listen a lot first, and talk less. I try to establish and undersrand what suits the client. You gain some great friends too, even though they started as clients. You really enjoy being with them."

On a final note, Castro predicts what's next on the horizon for his brand, and for the superyacht industry as whole.

"More motor boats, whether we like it or not. We have to try and make these boats more sustainable and less polutant. Technology is being pushed left, right and centre. It's really exciting, particularly with Catamarans. They're growing big time, just like the adventurer side. There's always something new where you have to adapt, and run with it."
