MYS 2023: Balk Shipyard Celebrates its 225th Birthday

By Frances Flannagan

Evan Kortmann, the newly appointed CEO of Balk Shipyard, joined Shari Lieu on the second day of the Monaco Yacht Show to discuss Balk’s history, current projects and future plans. Celebrating its 225th anniversary, we can only expect wonderful things from this boutique shipyard.

On the 1st July, Evan Kortmann was appointed the new CEO of Balk Shipyard. A seven generation yard, this humble and boutique company has the ability to produce projects of the highest quality, Kortmann saying: ‘We are capable to do big things and nice things on a high quality level. So it’s not the amount we do, it’s more the quality we do.’

A notable recent project is 50m EMERALD, a Feadship yacht. Following a 16 month refit, this yacht stuns the seas with a beautifully unique green hull, exuding a classy and chic design.

The shipyard has acknowledged the need to expand, and is hoping for a new yard within the next four years. With the opportunity to handle larger yachts up to 80m, and more yachts on a whole, Balk will continue its successes on a larger scale.

‘We see that there is a good market for refit and rebuild, and it’s logical if you look at the past how many new builds have been delivered in the last 20 years. All those boats have to be re-serviced, or refitted or maintained. This gives us the certainty to invest in this future pledge.’
