MYS 2023: Crestron on Replicating Home Entertainment Onboard Yachts
A regular in the Superyachts.com Interview Studios, Daniel Kerkhof, Director of Crestron Marine, joined Shari Liu during the Monaco Yacht Show to catch up on the evolving trends of onboard technology.
Daniel and Shari discuss the challenge of recreating home entertainment environments onboard superyachts, with the changing nature of content consumption reflected in guests’ priorities.
While on the topic of demands coming from younger owners with a blank chequebook, the challenge is certainly not something that Daniel is afraid of. “It’s cool, it’s what I like and it is what keeps my job interesting!” shares Daniel. “I’ve been at Crestron for almost 12 years now and if you see the changes we’ve made over that period, it’s really amazing. The systems today don’t look anything like they did 12 years ago.”
One of the biggest developments has been in the way in which content is consumed, and ensuring their entertainment environment can be replicated onboard superyachts.
“On top of their lists is to watch online content just as easily in their own houses and villas,” continues Daniel. “For yachting this is a very new request, because internet connections at sea have always been quite limited and only recently with Starlink coming in has the game changed.”
During FLIBS 2022, we joined Daniel onboard a Westport yacht to discuss the future of superyacht technology. Back then, Dan highlighted the importance of streaming media for the experience, and Crestron has made great strides in providing products and experiences to replicate the home media environment.
