MYS 2023: Espen Øino Discusses the Popularity of Multihulls
World-renowned superyacht designer Espen Øino joined us at the Superyachts.com interview studio on the first day of the Monaco Yacht Show. Emphasising the popularity of multihulls, he explained the features of this design which has led to its success.
As a highly esteemed player in the superyacht industry, Espen Øino’s success is showcased in one very specific project that he has been working on this year: a second yacht for an owner who purchased his first Espen Øino superyacht 20 years ago. The choice to return to this designer highlights the incredible work that is still as popular today as it was two decades ago.
Øino has acknowledged what drives his passion for design, this being his love of drawing boats and the process of seeing them come alive. What inspires him is the passion to continue designing and improving on what he has previously created; a major factor in why his designs continue to be successful and popular.
The designer’s portfolio is varied, mirroring the diversity that comes with each and every client, the limited editions such as the Amels 60 highlighting the ways in which he is diversifying his designs.
Regarding the increasing popularity of multihulls, Øino’s designs are particularly successful in this category: the first 36m Spacecat was delivered last year, with two more already in construction.
In reference to multihulls, Øino commented: 'seakeeping is absolutely one of the qualities of these boats. You can really maintain higher speeds in head seas in particular because you have less volume in the hull right on the centre line.'
Lending themselves to owners who desire excellent performance yachts as well as sustainable vessels, multihulls are highly appealing. 'Typically they can go faster in heavy seas than the monohull', Øino pointed out, as well as lending themselves 'very well to indoor/outdoor spaces so we can ventilate them naturally and therefore reduce the IC load considerably.'
