MYS 2023: Hydro Tec on Bringing its History to Projects of Today
Attending our interview at the Monaco Yacht Show for the first time, we welcomed Sergio Cutolo and Richard Partington from Hydro Tec. A company which takes a holistic approach to design, Cutolo and Partington speak about this being a benefit for the business.
Hydro Tec is a holistic yacht design firm, stemming from the fact that it oversees naval architecture, engineering and design. By dealing with all projects within the same office, shipyard’s benefit from this approach due to have dialogue with only one entity.
Sergio Cutolo, President and Founder of Hydro Tec, and Richard Partington, Design Director, discussed with Shari Liu two of the company’s notable designs: AURELIA and the recently launched 55m catamaran.
AURELIA encapsulates Hydro Tec’s holistic approach by containing features which are incredibly unique. Partington commented: ‘It has a unique feature of the A-Frame launching the tenders from the aft and this is something which we had to work really together to try and make it work in the correct way because we wanted a seamless main deck aft. To have this area that can be used in different ways.’
Cutolo adds to the remarkable features of this yacht, describing the main salon which has large 3.5m windows whilst having an asymmetrical layout. This, the President and Founder acknowledged, was possible because they were ‘basically sat at the same table together’ throughout the design process.
The 55m catamaran was a push for the company; a completely different concept as they usually design monohulls. Cutolo’s long history with catamarans inspired this design and led to its successful execution: the history of the company being translated into today’s designs.
‘This really came from the history of the company and trying to bring it into how we now design our yachts.’
The result is a stunning, ‘floating Mediterranean island of its own’, Partington acknowledging the impeccable work of Hydro Tec’s design team. Cutolo described the different lifestyles and changing expectations of a yacht lending themselves to the widening popularity of catamarans, a market which will see Hydro Tec thrive due to its rich history and holistic design approach.
