MYS 2023: Tony Castro Yacht Design on Exploring ‘Remote’ Areas of the Industry
Joining us for the third time, we welcomed Tony Castro, CEO of Tony Castro Yacht Design, to speak with Shari Liu at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023. Pushing the boundaries of exploration within the industry, Tony Castro discussed his fascinating expedition to Antarctica and the yacht design aspects required to complete such a trip.
Surrounded by hundreds of absolutely stunning yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show, Tony Castro, CEO of Tony Castro Yacht Design, asked the question of: ‘What else is there that one could explore?’. Looking to push the traditional superyacht design boundaries, and inspired by a project he oversaw fifteen years ago for a client who wished to design boats suitable for Antarctica, Castro finally managed to visit the Southernmost continent earlier this year.
Upon visiting Antarctica, Castro expressed that it made him understand the intriguing list of requirements that his previous client wanted:
‘It made me realise that everything this guy’s been asking me for fifteen years… how true all these requirements are, because you are so far away from everywhere… you’ve got to be absolutely prepared for the worst.’
Exploring this highly niche area of the industry, Castro described how he wishes for yacht owners to follow suit: ‘Hopefully there are some owners of some of the boats here… who would like to have a different kind of programme. You know, they’ve done the fancy areas…and now they want to take their family to different places.’
As evident by his Antarctica excursion, Castro discussed how his design studio is reinventing itself all the time. ‘If you are the kind of designer who just specialises in one thing then it’s easy, because you just carry on. Unfortunately, again, for my sins, I’m the opposite.’ This hunger for exploration shows how Tony Castro Yacht Design will never fail to amaze the yachting industry, pushing the boundaries and uncovering new and exciting ways to enjoy the superyacht world.
