MYS 2024: CIU on The Appeal of Obtaining a Second Citizenship in Antigua

By Frances Flannagan

On day three of the Monaco Yacht Show, Shari Liu sat down with Ambassador Jeffery Hadeed, Chairman of the CIP Board of Directors, to discuss the unique opportunities offered by Antigua’s Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU).

The CIU is the entity that operates the Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP): an initiative designed to attract foreign direct investment to Antigua.

Ambassador Jeffery Hadeed, Chairman of the CIP Board of Directors, shared with Shari Liu: ‘Antigua’s not the typical workplace, so people come to invest and work, I think it's more a lifestyle investment.’

Hadeed spoke about the four pathways available for prospects, alongside the six to twelve month process and monetary details. One of the most unique aspects of the CIP is that it is ‘the only program that requires a five day stay’, meaning that in order for a citizen to have their passport renewed in the first five years, they must stay on the island for five days.

Hadeed commented: ‘It gives you some sort of genuine link. It gives you a feel for the country you have become a citizen to.’ In this sense, this five day stay allows people to get to know the country and see the opportunities within it.

There’s a plethora of reasons why people may wish for a second citizenship; ranging from becoming part of a wealth portfolio, to making the most of the mobility available on the island.
