MYS 2025: Wordley Partnerships Ltd John Leonida on Superyacht Ownership Responsibilities
At the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show, Superyachts.com welcomed John Leonida, one of the superyacht industry’s most respected legal minds and Of Counsel at the Wordley Partnership, for a thought-provoking discussion on the evolving responsibilities, ethics, and challenges surrounding yacht ownership.
Leonida opened the conversation by addressing the most common mistake first-time yacht owners make: underestimating the true scope of ownership responsibilities. Touching on his work with high-profile clients, Leonida spoke about balancing legal realities with personal expectations as he coined the expression ‘the two happiest days of a yacht owner's life are the day they buy and the day they sell.’ He noted that many new buyers view acquisition as the finish line, when in fact it’s only the beginning of a complex operational, legal, and managerial journey.
Discussing how ethical and legal standards have evolved, Leonida observed a significant maturation in the sector over the past two decades, as ‘I would say there weren't any right from the get go.’ He credited this to both internal reforms and external pressures, such as tightening anti-money laundering frameworks and global transparency initiatives. Contracts today, he noted, place greater emphasis on fairness, accountability, and transparency: principles that were once secondary but are now essential in maintaining industry credibility.
Closing the interview, Leonida emphasised that while the superyacht industry faces growing regulatory and ethical challenges, it also stands on the threshold of a more mature, responsible era including one that recognises that true luxury is not just possession, but stewardship.
"I don't sugarcoat things and that is the way I have always done it."
