Oceanco's 127m Koru Delivered

By Heather Collier

After much anticipation and a successful set of sea trials, Oceanco's 127-metre Koru Y271 has now been delivered to her owner.

Oceanco's Koru was spotted leaving the shipyard on the 6th of April, where she soon began her maiden voyage to Gilbraltar, cruising at a speed of 13 knots.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos is believed to have commissioned the construction of the superyacht in 2018, which hit major headlines for the first time last year when it required a historic bridge in Rotterdam to be dismantled in order to reach the open sea.

The $500m vessel, previously known as Project Y721, was christened in Feburary 2023 under the Māori word 'Koru', which translates to 'new beginnings'. The official name was unveiled when it began transmitting on the vessel's automatic identification system.

The majority of the vessel's specifications remain highly confidential, with the shipyard stating: "Oceanco values the privacy and confidentiality of all our clients and prospective clients and therefore does not comment on our involvement or non-involvement in specific projects."

Although very little about Koru's design team has been revealed, it is clear that she features three 70 metre-tall carbon masts, a distinct black hull and white superstructure, complimented by classic exterior lines.

She is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a plethora of luxurious accommodation and amenities for all on board.

Key features are said to include a large pool on the aft deck, a further Jacuzzi on her flybridge, and multiple areas for relaxing across her open decks, with a number of plush alfresco lounges for guests to enjoy.

Koru is the longest yacht ever to have been launched in the Netherlands and will officially be the tallest sailing yacht in the world, superseding the current largest ocean-going passenger ship Sea Cloud.

A second yacht was also believed to be commissioned by the Amazon Founder with the responsibility of holding Koru's toys, tenders, submarine and helicopter, as well as other marine gear. Formerly known as 'Wingman', she has now been christened 'Abeona'. The custom 75-metre is Damen’s largest support vessel to date.

We look forward to watching Koru undertake the remainder of her voyage.
