Our Favourite Building Nation's Moments

By Sophia Spanton

The Building Nations series captivated audiences in 2025, peeling back the curtain on yachting’s human heart across the Netherlands, Turkey, the USA, and beyond. From raw emotion on shop floors to visionary rebuilds, these standout moments captured the passion fueling global superyacht excellence.

Damen Yachting’s Handover

Episode One’s Netherlands spotlight delivered one of the series’ most visceral moments. Veteran Head of Production Bert Becker’s emotional handover after 21 years left many in tears. 'In my head I’ve made the decision, but in my heart I’m not sure', he said, embodying the generational devotion that powers Dutch shipyards like Damen, Oceanco, and Heesen. Rose Damen celebrated the milestone, adding 'It’s not just the colleagues, it’s also their families'... Damen Yachting is all about people.

Oceanco’s Project H Rebirth:

Episode One peaked with Oceanco’s staggering Project H refit, stripping a 20-year-old icon delivered by the yard in 2000, adding 10 metres, and rebuilding her into a modern masterpiece. 'It’s another industry first... we want to give an example of what’s possible', said Paris Baloumis as engineers tackled the 'rollercoaster' challenges of new engines, electrical systems, and superstructure. The emotional launch brought goosebumps and tears, like welcoming a new life.

Vikal Shop Floor

Episode Four’s Australian deep dive uncovered Vikal International’s tender maestro, who shared a haunting truth: 'I only feel normal here on the shop floor'. Surrounded by bespoke builds, his words captured how remote yards like Vikal turn isolation into intimacy, forging crews who live for the craft. It is this unfiltered humanity that makes Building Nations addictive.

Numarine’s Suggestion Box Revolution

Turkey’s Episode Two highlighted Numarine’s employee-driven innovation. A single shop floor idea from the suggestion box streamlined production and slashed waste. What began as one worker’s scribble became a yard-wide triumph, showcasing how Bilgin, Turquoise, and KRM cultivate grassroots ingenuity. Moments like this help explain Turkey’s rise as the world’s second-largest builder.

America’s Community Pulse

Episode Three’s US tour pulsed with communal spirit at Westport, Hacker, and Derecktor, where yachting is not just a job but a lifeline sustaining entire towns. From Hacker’s heritage woodworkers to Westport’s assembly-line rhythm, the episode framed America as 'Land of the Sea,' where freedom on water binds families and fuels local economies. These vignettes proved that yachting’s ripple effect knows no borders.

We hoped Building Nations would showcase yards but in turth we have found the series has also humanised an industry of dream-makers. Relive the full series on Amazon Prime or Apple TV, where every episode reminds us that superyachts are built by people, for people.
