Pushing the Limits: Three Superyachts Redefining Long-Range Cruising

By Nora Hart

As the pursuit of global exploration continues to shape the future of superyacht design, three vessels stand out for their pioneering approach to long-range cruising. COSMOS, AZZAM and PROJECT MASTER may differ in origin and style, but each represents a distinct response to the growing demand for yachts capable of travelling farther, cleaner, and more efficiently than ever before. Together, they chart the course for a new era of ocean-going capability.

COSMOS – 114m

Recently launched by Lürssen, COSMOS is a celebration of innovation. Designed inside and out by Marc Newson, she combines sculptural elegance with serious cruising potential. Built to Ice Class 1D and spanning six decks, she is engineered for true global exploration.

COSMOS is also Lürssen’s first yacht to feature methanol fuel-cell technology, allowing for 1,000 nautical miles of zero-emission cruising or 15 days at anchor without generator use. With uninterrupted glass-lined interiors and a remarkable domed owner’s study, she blends cutting-edge sustainability with striking aesthetics.

AZZAM – 180m

Still the longest private yacht in the world, AZZAM remains one of Lürssen’s greatest technical triumphs. Launched in 2013, her record-breaking length is matched by astonishing performance: two gas turbines and two diesel engines produce 97,000hp, allowing her to reach speeds over 30 knots.

But AZZAM is not just fast, she is long-range capable, too. A separate diesel cruising mode enables transatlantic voyages with ease, supported by a fuel capacity of one million litres. Her sleek Nauta-designed profile conceals a complex propulsion system more commonly found in naval vessels, making her a true outlier in both scale and speed.

PROJECT MASTER – 70m

Currently in conversion at ICON Yachts, PROJECT MASTER takes a different approach to long-range readiness. Originally built as a North Sea rescue vessel, she is being transformed into a state-of-the-art expedition yacht with Polar Code C certification and a range of 6,700 nautical miles.

Her advanced diesel-electric hybrid system with electric Voith Schneider Propellers (eVSPs) offers precision, efficiency and low noisem ideal for sensitive environments. Designed by Espen Øino and Winch Design, she will feature rugged tenders, a commercial helideck, and a science lab, placing functionality at the forefront of her design.

From the avant-garde technology of COSMOS to the sheer power of AZZAM and the purpose-built efficiency of PROJECT MASTER, these yachts illustrate the diverse paths being taken toward global, long-range yachting. Each in its own way reflects a shift in priorities, towards endurance, sustainability, and capability, at the highest level of design and performance.
