Royal Huisman Marks 140th Anniversary with a Milestone Hull Turning

By Frances Flannagan

Marking the Dutch yard’s 140th anniversary, the hull has successfully been turned of the secretive Project 410: the world’s largest sloop. This extraordinary vessel is just one of Royal Huisman’s super-sized sailing yachts that benefits from a green footprint, free wind propulsion and an energy-neutral mode, resulting in her to be as impressive in her technology as she is in size.

Coined the ‘85m New World Sloop’, Project 410 represents a highly exciting build for Royal Huisman as she is set to be the largest yacht with a single mast, encapsulating the pinnacle of design and engineering.

As she was wheeled out of the construction hall of the shipyard in Vollenhove, her extraordinary scale was revealed to onlookers, showcasing two levels of accommodation. Those in attendance marvelled at the seamless manoeuvring of the hull turning, as four cranes lifted Project 410 mid-air over the canal, the upright hull now to be placed on a cradle and returned to the shed until completion.

Project 410 is the result of a harmonious collaboration between her Owner and his team, Frers Design for the overall concept, exterior design and naval architecture and Wetzels Brown for the interior design.

Royal Huisman’s in-house team engineered the design of this project, which was first unveiled to the industry in 2022 at an exclusive event held during the St. Barths Bucket Regatta. Her aluminium hull is in build at the shipyard in Vollenhove, and is so impressively large that it has required the extension to Hall 2 to be accommodated.

Jan Timmerman, CEO at Royal Huisman, commented: ‘Super-sized Royal Huisman sailing yachts can benefit from a green footprint, free wind propulsion, and an energy-neutral mode. This mode generates sufficient power for all systems and recharges batteries for silent anchoring. These features were developed by our team before the start of the build of the world’s first hybrid superyacht nearly two decades ago.’

This significant stage of Project 410’s construction means that the Royal Huisman team can proceed with the next steps of her build, including developing onboard systems and outfitting. The next stage will include the attachment of the bow section, which is currently under construction, with the shipyard’s sister company Rondal also advancing the production of the carbon boom, mast and integrated sailing system.

Out of the ten largest sailing yachts that have either been built or are under construction, four are Royal Huisman designs: ATHENA, SEA EAGLE, Project 410 and a second super-sized sailing yacht that is in build. These four masterpieces of design represent the many advantages that come with large sailing yachts over motoryachts, recognised by Timmerman as: ‘the thrill of hoisting sails, cutting through waves and advanced technologies that enhance comfort.’

Royal Huisman’s large sailing yachts are truly a testament to the Dutch yard’s unwavering commitment to innovation, each one embodying the shipyard’s ethos of ‘the ultimate expression of personal freedom.'
