Sanlorenzo’s 50Steel: The World’s First Green Methanol Fuel Cell Yacht Launched
Marking a significant moment in the industry with regards to zero-impact energy production, Sanlorenzo has launched the first unit of its 50Steel superyacht. She is the world’s first vessel to be fitted with a Green Methanol Fuel Cell system, able to power the hotel systems with zero emissions.
The launch of Sanlorenzo’s 50Steel represents a highly exciting time within the superyacht industry, as she introduces the green methanol Fuel Cell system to the market.
‘With the launch of the 50Steel, Sanlorenzo celebrates a fundamental milestone in its history, in the spirit of innovation and sustainability. The new line of superyachts embodies the pioneering spirit and passion for challenges that have always guided us in the design and construction of our fleet,’ commented Cav. Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group. ‘I believe what sets us apart is the ability to drive industry innovation, embracing cutting-edge solutions not only in design, always elegant and comfortable, but also in the field of technology and sustainability, to achieve the ambitious goals of reducing our environmental footprint.’
Her modular Reformer - Fuel Cell system has been developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into energy, without having to store hydrogen onboard. 50Steel is the world’s first yacht to be fitted with this revolutionary solution, capable of generating electrical energy up to 100kW.
The Fuel Cell system is not the only innovation onboard 50Steel; she also introduces the Hidden Engine Room system (HER) to the yachting industry. This concept enables space to be maximised significantly, creating an additional living area and completely transforming the traditional layout of a vessel.
The HER system keeps the yacht under 500 tons of displacement whilst allowing for new ways of interpreting space onboard, including a redesigned layout of the engine room. The lower deck benefits from the Ocean Lounge which is directly connected with the large aft Beach Club, and also the guest area that includes a gym and spa.
She features a clean exterior penned by Zuccon International Project that perfectly reflects the Sanlorenzo style, boasting five staggered decks, with spacious and open areas onboard.
Piero Lissoni is responsible for the interior of the first unit of the 50Steel, creating spaces that are characterised by the reinvention of classic styles in a contemporary key. The studio has also employed 3D technology for the first time in this project: to ensure optimal control over every detail, the technical model developed by Sanlorenzo is able to be overlaid with the architectural model.
Every single space onboard the 50Steel has been optimised due to the alteration of the traditional distribution system of spaces; she accommodates four guest cabins and one Owner’s cabin, alongside two pools on the aft Beach Club and on the sun deck.
The interiors are well connected, with the three upper levels benefiting from a system of stairs that do not affect the profile of the yacht. Like with all Sanlorenzo vessels, her design ensures maximum comfort onboard, highlighted by her Beach Club that has three open terraces that become a 150 sqm beach-on-the-sea when anchored.
Superyachts.com would like to congratulate Sanlorenzo on this milestone launch, as we witness a number of industry-firsts that represent the very best of both innovation and sustainability within the yachting world.
