Sound Without Sight: Sonance is Revolutionising Marine Audio Design

By Sophia Spanton

For over three decades, Sonance has quietly set the benchmark for integrated audio across the world’s most iconic superyachts. From early installations in Northern Europe to collaborations with leading shipyards and designers worldwide, the brand has continually evolved to meet the unique demands of marine environments, and always with an unwavering commitment to design integrity.

At the heart of the Sonance philosophy lies the principle of 'Design to Disappear'. Each speaker and system is engineered to blend seamlessly into a yacht’s architecture, preserving the clean lines and refined aesthetics of high-end interiors, while delivering exceptional sound quality. Whether it is subtle background music or a full-scale cinema experience, Sonance ensures the audio is as impressive as the surroundings.

The latest innovation from Sonance is the Visual Experience (VX) Series, a unified product range that brings together Sonance and its premium bespoke brand, James Loudspeaker. This cohesive collection allows designers and integrators to mix and match solutions throughout the vessel, maintaining a consistent visual style without compromise. The VXQ line, in particular, features IP67-rated speakers, purpose built to withstand the harshest conditions at sea while delivering studio-quality audio.

The VX Series is the result of decades of speaker design and innovation, now enhanced by advanced simulation and machine learning. The result is a range of speakers offering balanced coverage, low distortion, and a smooth, natural sound-optimised for both comfort and clarity. Each model is available with a choice of Micro Trim or Trimless grilles, and can be installed flush with the surface using Sonance’s TRUFIG mounting technology, ensuring a flawless finish in any space.

Beyond the traditional round or square models, available in any finish or even printed to match their surroundings, Sonance and James Loudspeaker offer custom solutions that push the boundaries of marine audio design. These include discreet speakers delivering powerful sound through three-inch apertures aligned with ceiling light fixtures, and fully invisible speakers that can be installed behind leather, wood veneer, or fabric, leaving interiors beautifully uncluttered.

Sonance’s outdoor offering has also expanded, now including weather-resistant VX subwoofers and removable deck-mounted tower speakers-ideal for helipads, open decks, or event spaces. These towers plug into flush-mounted deck sockets, can be removed when not in use, and are available in colour-matched finishes to complement any exterior.

Whether it is a tranquil spa, a private cinema, or a lively party deck, Sonance delivers a refined balance of performance, design, and customisation, ensuring every area of the yacht not only looks stunning, but sounds exquisite as well.

Because life at sea is better with music.
