Studio Spotlight: Winch Design and the Art of Bespoke Design

By Nora Hart

Founded in 1986 by Andrew and Jane Winch, Winch Design has evolved from a specialist yacht studio into one of the world’s leading international yacht design and architectural practices. Renowned for their ultra-high-end, bespoke approach, the studio works across yachts, aviation, architecture and interiors, delivering fully integrated projects tailored precisely to each client’s lifestyle. With multiple landmark projects unveiled, delivered and advanced on the world stage, 2025 marks a particularly significant year for the studio, underscoring their continued influence, creative momentum and leadership in modern yacht design.

With a multidisciplinary team of more than 150 designers, naval architects and creatives, Winch Design is distinguished by a holistic, turn-key philosophy. From exterior lines and interior architecture to furniture, artwork and finishes, every detail is conceived as part of a unified vision, creating environments defined by a unique balance between emotion and exceptional craftsmanship.

This approach is clearly expressed in FLOWFORM, the 35m sailing yacht concept unveiled at the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show. Developed with Frers Design, FLOWFORM draws inspiration from the natural flow of light, water and air, combining a transparent deckhouse and fluid interiors with high-performance sailing credentials.

On a far grander scale, PROJECT SKY demonstrates Winch Design’s ambition at the pinnacle of sailing yacht design. The 81m sloop, created with Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design and Royal Huisman, is set to feature the world’s tallest mast. Designed for world cruising, SKY pairs advanced naval architecture with serene, nature-inspired interiors and is ready to build with an accelerated delivery timeline.

Winch Design’s lifestyle-led philosophy is equally evident in recent motor yacht projects such as HERE COMES THE SUN’s revamped interiors, which emphasise relaxed, experiential luxury, and REVERIE, unveiled for Oceanco’s Simply Custom 80m range. REVERIE blends clean lines with flexible layouts and a striking three-deck beach and wellness concept, reflecting the studio’s modern, sustainability-conscious approach.

And the recently completed HIGH FIVE, a 29-metre performance cruising sloop, further underlines Winch Design’s ability to translate personal vision into design. Conceived as a true home on the water, she prioritises family life while remaining visually stunning.

Beyond yachts, Winch Design’s versatility is emphasised in their work across architecture and aviation. At Kuredhi Residence on Velaa Private Island in the Maldives, the studio reimagined a four-bedroom beachfront retreat that translates their yacht-inspired ethos onto land, blending soft sea tones, natural textures and bespoke furnishings with seamless indoor-outdoor living. This same design language carries through to aviation projects such as the 2024 refurbishment of the Bombardier GLOBAL 6000, where layered natural materials, wave-inspired detailing and striking metallic teal tones transformed a ten-year-old aircraft into a refined modern jet, underscoring their ability to craft cohesive, bespoke environments.

Across every discipline and scale, Winch Design remains guided by a commitment to creating uplifting, beautifully balanced spaces. As the studio continues to expand their reach across sea, sky and land, they stand at the forefront of contemporary luxury design, redefining how bespoke environments are not only imagined, but experienced.
