When one reflects on sustainability highlights of 2024, they will undoubtedly think of Feadship’s Project 821: the world’s first ever hydrogen cell superyacht that was launched in May. However, this innovative launch was by no means the only eco-friendly advancement in the industry this year. Superyachts.com takes a look at the impressive array of sustainable designs and initiatives that have emerged over the last twelve months, each one pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in eco-conscious luxury.

Sunreef Yachts Revealed Unmatched Sustainable Features of Sunreef 43 Eco

Sunreef Yachts revealed exciting progress on the Sunreef 43 Eco in November, a groundbreaking superyacht designed to redefine sustainable yachting. Currently under construction, the 43-meter vessel features over 120 sqm of solar panels, contributing to a total of 250 sqm of solar surface across the yacht. This, combined with an electric propulsion system, marks a significant step toward greener yachting without compromising on performance.

The Ultimate Hybrid Pioneer: Greenline Yachts

Greenline Yachts has long been a leader in sustainable yachting, developing vessels with unmatched eco-friendly advancements. In 2024, Greenline highlighted its innovative approach to the industry. Driven by the increasing demand for sustainable yachting, it integrates hybrid electric propulsion and efficient design elements such as ‘super displacement’ hulls for smooth, stable cruising.

Owner Vladimir Zinchenko has championed hybrid electric propulsion, developing the 6G H-Drive diesel-electric powertrain. The shipyard also prioritizes sustainability in its construction process, using recycled materials, low-emission resins, and eliminating single-use items.

Sanlorenzo’s 50Steel: The World’s First Green Methanol Fuel Cell Yacht Launched

Sanlorenzo launched its groundbreaking 50Steel superyacht in May 2024. She became the world’s first vessel to feature a Green Methanol Fuel Cell system, allowing her systems to run on zero emissions. Developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, this innovative system converts green methanol into hydrogen, producing up to 100kW of electrical energy without needing to store hydrogen onboard.

Rossinavi Launched its First Hybrid-Electric Catamaran SEAWOLF X

In May, Rossinavi launched its first hybrid-electric catamaran, SEAWOLF X, a 42.75m vessel powered by the innovative BluE technology. Capable of operating in full electric mode for day trips and up to 90% electric mode for multi-day voyages, it represents a major step in sustainable yachting. In Hibernation mode, it minimizes fuel use and can supply energy to a quay or villa.

Feadship’s Brand New Solar-Cell Superyacht Successfully Launched

Feadship launched 59.50m Project 713 in June, a milestone in the shipyard’s environmental journey and commitment to achieving net zero by 2030. The yacht is the first from Feadship to feature solar cells, contributing to her energy efficiency with up to 24MWh generated annually. Fitted with diesel-electric propulsion, she runs on HVO, and is 35% below average environmental impact, according to the Yacht Environmental Index.
