The 2020 Rolex Swan Cup to Return to YCCS

By George Bains

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) will be hosting the 2020 edition of the Rolex Swan Cup from 7 to 13 September. The spine-tingling sailing event will once again return to the yachting paradise of Sardinia’s Porto Cervo, where over 60 yachts are due to compete in one of the first events since the disruption.

The 21st edition of the Rolex Swan Cup will bring together enthusiasts of both the ocean and racing in what is being labelled as a ‘Celebration of the Sea’. Nautor’s Swan, Rolex and YCCS will be thrilled to be able to return to another show after the challenging months of the global health crisis. Organisers and owners of the regatta see this as a perfect opportunity to provide a watershed moment following the enforced time apart, bringing passionate sailors together.

The Rolex Swan Cup will be the second regatta of the 2020 Mediterranean season, and one of the largest to take place this year. All plans for the event have been made with close attention and respect to the Italian Government’s safety guidelines for the benefit of all participants and visitors. The ‘double soul’ racing and cruising spirit of Nautor’s Swan will be displayed in the seven classes from both modern and classic eras that will compete. The celebration will also be felt in a number of post-race activities over the course of the week.

Enrico Chieffi, Vice President of Nautor Group, commented: “The Rolex Swan Cup will be one of the first sailing events after a season of enforced rest and we are amazed by the response we’ve already had in terms of participation. More than 60 yachts have already registered, confirming that our owners are thrilled to participate in the regatta and they can’t wait to start racing again all together in Sardinia, celebrating their love for the sea, the sport of sailing and our brand.”

The seven classes of the Rolex Swan Cup will include the Swan Maxi Class (60ft and above), Swan Grand Prix Class (below 60ft), the historic Sparkman & Stephens Class, and the Swan One Design Classes – which include the ClubSwan 36, ClubSwan 42, Swan 45 and ClubSwan 50 fleets. The event will also be an opportunity to showcase the newest models from Nautor’s Swan range of yachts, featuring a prestigious design collaboration between naval architect Germán Frers and interior designer Misa Poggi. Amongst the new models on show will be the Swan 65 and Swan 78 yachts from the bluewater range.

It will also be the first ever time that the Maxi Swan 98 will be in water. Making her debut, the Swan 98 is an exciting creation which has been developed based on the superyacht experience and expertise of Nautor’s Swan and architect Frers. Her dual-purpose deck area provides a perfect space for both efficient sailing and comfortable leisure activities. The expansive foredeck transforms into an inviting sun deck for relaxing at anchor, while also providing a spacious sail handling area when competing at a regatta. The yacht boasts a ‘grande’ leisure cockpit lounging and dining facilities can provide guests a comfortable space to relax in, while the timeless interior by Misa Poggi has a choice of four different moods and two configurations.

For aficionados of sailing and lovers of the ocean, it will be both a relief and an excitement to see the return of the Rolex Swan Cup after such a testing period. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will once again thrive as a hub of yachting activity.
