The Luxury Superyacht Marinas of Sydney & Melbourne

By George Bains

Australia is a country which offers an immensely diverse range of experiences for superyacht charters. Sydney and Melbourne are two thrilling city destinations for superyachts, where world-class events, luxury delights and electric atmospheres await. Both cities boast premier superyacht marinas in the centre, and here we take a look at the best luxury marinas in Sydney and Melbourne…

Sydney

Sydney becomes the centre stage for superyachts during its New Year’s Eve celebrations, and there a few sights more iconic than a superyacht sailing in front of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. While Sydney is popular for day charters, there is so much to experience on longer charters throughout the surrounding cruising grounds. Superyachts basing themselves in Sydney benefit from two world-class facilities in the centre of the city.

First built to accommodate yachts for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Sydney Superyacht Marina offers large berthing facilities on the Harbour’s Rozelle Bay. Sydney Superyacht Marina has become distinguished for its exceptional standard of service for superyachts, from a personable concierge service through to fuel bunkering and on-site maintenance trades.

Speaking to Superyachts.com in February 2020, shortly after the passing of ground-breaking new charter legislation in Australia, Marina Manager Clemens Overdijk explained his direct approach to ensuring that Captains have everything they need to be comfortable during their stay in Sydney.

Sydney Superyacht Marina is well-equipped for the increase of internationally flagged vessels that is expected over the coming years. There are 20+ superyacht berths accommodating vessels up to 74m in Rozelle Bay, while Sydney Superyacht Marina also has an extra 60m berth in the incredible central location of Campbells Cove, tucked under the Harbour Bridge.

With a backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Jones Bay Wharf is a fantastic superyacht marina based in the entertainment district of Pyrmont. Jones Bay Wharf has been used as a stunning setting for major industry events, including the Benetti-sponsored Superyacht Australia Grand Soirée.

Managed by Scope Marine, a company established and run by experienced yachting professionals, Jones Bay Wharf is home to a range of maritime clientele, including premium brokerage houses and some of Australia’s most renowned charter superyachts.

Just a short walk from the vibrant Darling Harbour, Jones Bay Wharf is very much a part of the heritage infrastructure of Sydney. Originally built in 1919, the site was redeveloped in 2003 and now welcomes international superyachts with large berthing facilities and a host of restaurants and cafes on the wharf for waterfront dining with a spectacular view.

Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia’s capital of culture and events. This is a city with a distinctive style and artistic flair, epitomised by its bustling laneways which are brimming with culinary treats. For superyachts, Melbourne offers an enviable calendar of major events all-year-round. Whether visiting for one of the renowned sporting fixtures, including the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open, or simply to just indulge in the city wonders of Melbourne, you will be welcomed by centrally located luxury marinas.

The 5-Gold Anchor Melbourne Superyacht Marina places superyachts in the heart of the newly renovated Docklands area. Surrounded by charming waterfront cafes and restaurants, the Melbourne Superyacht Marina offers berthing for superyachts up to 65 metres in length.

The Docklands is a modern and lively harbour, which is overlooked by the Marvel Stadium, a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium which regularly hosts performances by global stars.

It is not just the Docklands area that has benefitted from investment. The Superyacht Marina itself has been enhanced with new features such as a contemporary lounge for visiting Owners, Captains and guests. Growing the modern standards of luxury, the Marina meets all needs for superyachts arriving to the energetic city of Melbourne.

D’Albora Marinas is a group of marinas across Victoria and New South Wales with a strong lifestyle element to enhance the superyacht experience. In Melbourne, Victoria Harbour and Pier 35 are two stand-out d’Albora Marinas for visiting superyachts.

Victoria Harbour is a full-service boutique marina in the centre of the Docklands, ideal for weekend charters in the city. Within a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s CBD, Victoria Harbour has impeccable marine facilities along with a relaxing club room to provide a sanctuary for yachts.

Pier 35 if found along Melbourne’s Yarra River, at the mouth of Port Philip Bay. Another well-equipped marina with club room and its own restaurant, Pier 35 is a favourite among guests for its authentic and welcoming atmosphere.
