The World’s Largest and Most Advanced Yacht REV OCEAN Resumes Build

By Frances Flannagan

In June 2021, the construction of 182.9m REV OCEAN was put on hold due to technical and weight challenges. Now, just over two years later, her build has resumed as she captivates the industry once again as the world’s most advanced research and expedition yacht.

REV OCEAN was established in 2017 with the mission to generate a new generation of ocean solutions and raise awareness of the global impacts on marine environment. She poses a once in a lifetime experience with regards to both research and charter, and holds the title of the world’s largest and most advanced research vessel.

The estimated delay of her build was three to five years; however, it has been announced that the construction of REV OCEAN will now resume and that an agreement on completion has been reached with shipbuilder VARD. This time round, the vessel has caught even greater attention as her length will be increased by 12 metres giving her a staggering LOA of 194.9m. More space will be created onboard as well as increased science capacity in her main hangar.

As a research vessel, REV OCEAN will accommodate 36 crew members and 54 scientists. She is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to enable research to be conducted that covers the entire marine system. These include sampling, observation, mapping and communication equipment.

It is only fitting that REV OCEAN has a plethora of stand-out features to accompany her spectacular design. To facilitate research, the vessel has a number of laboratories, diving facilities, over seven tenders, multibeam echosounders and AURELIA: the world’s deepest diving three-person acrylic submersible.

Not only is REV OCEAN set to change the course of oceanic research, she also presents a once-in-a-lifetime charter opportunity: up to 28 guests can find themselves completely immersed in the research carried out onboard by a selection of the best scientists in the world. Guests will be able to discover shipwrecks, observe and listen to humpback whales, assist in the naming of new species, as well as have access to a media suite in which they can create movies of onboard experiences.

REV OCEAN is set to be delivered in February 2025, meaning that she will be fully operational from Q4 2026. She is an outstanding vessel that is set to significantly change the maritime industry, and we at Superyachts.com eagerly anticipate future updates on her construction.
