Tillberg Design of Sweden: Transforming Dreams into Realities

By Frances Flannagan

Brand of Viken group, Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) has been a major player in cruise ship and yacht design for six decades. With a plethora of projects to showcase, the TDoS team prove to be exceptional, with an abundance of experience behind them leading them to successfully bring dreams to reality.

Tillberg Design of Sweden is a world-renowned cruise ship and yacht design studio. With 60 years of history behind the company, TDoS offers an exceptional experience from its extensive team across cruise ship design, superyacht design, branding and signage. The varied and combined experience of the team sets the studio apart from competitors.

From more than 350 reference projects borne from close relationships with every major brand in the cruise industry, TDoS has a vast catalogue of bold designs and technological advancements. Alongside Founder, Robert Tillberg, the team’s innovations include a plethora of outstanding achievements, from the first atrium on a cruise ship aboard Sea Venture (1971), to building Queen Mary 2 (2003); the longest and largest passenger ship at the time of her launch.

The success of TDoS lies in several perfect balances: between cruise ship design and practicality and superyacht style and finishing; between the experience of architects who have been part of the team for decades and the fresh, creative energy of those who are new to the company; and between exquisite Scandinavian design and craftsmanship and the environmental awareness that is innate in Scandinavian society.

A blend between traditional cruise ships and private superyachts is increasingly coming to light, with the emergence of the cruise yacht transforming boutique cruise opportunities. With the functionality of cruise ships with a limited number of guests onboard, these vessels offer a superyacht-style experience.

60m explorer yacht MIMER, a recent yacht project for TDoS, perfectly reflects the team’s extraordinary capabilities. With beautifully refined interior spaces combined with a flexible explorer functionality, the versatility of the TDoS team’s experience can be showcased.

As well as boasting exceptional craftsmanship, sustainability is a concept at the heart of TDoS. The company strives not only to select sustainable materials and technologies for their projects, but they actively seek collaborations with like-minded companies to develop this element of their designs.

TDoS is home to the biggest materials library within the industry, located at the company’s head office in the beautiful marina of Höganäs. This showcases the company’s prominent and influential place within the industry.

Helena Sawelin, Partner and Business Director at TDoS, has commented on the company’s ethos: ‘For Robert Tillberg, the most important thing was to combine function into the design… He also used to say, never give up until you get it right. That ethos is as strong at Tillberg Design of Sweden today as it was 60 years ago when he founded the company.’ Tillberg Design of Sweden is, evidently, one of the major players in cruising design with an ethos that has served the company exceptionally for 60 years and will continue to do so in the hands of an awe-inspiring team.
