Top 100: Njord on Designing Superyachts for the Future

By Emily Dawkins

Sarah Colbon, Co-Founder of Njord by Bergman Design House, sat down with Superyachts.com to shine a light on the design studio’s latest sustainable superyacht projects and its developments to create greener interiors.

As the yachting arm of the esteemed London design studio Bergman Design House, Njord works to create innovative interiors that push the boundaries of yacht design. With years of combined experience in luxury interiors, Co-Founders, Marie Soliman, Albin Berglund and Sarah Colbon have grown an attractive portfolio of hotel design, wellness, UHNW private residences, commercial property and of course, luxury yachting interiors.

Joining us before the premiere of our Top 100: Building Green Giants documentary, Co-Founder of Njord, Sarah Colbon, discussed how superyacht interiors are adapting to a new, more eco-conscious generation of owners: ‘we're getting a lot of new owners, a lot of young owners, coming in who don't ask you to provide sustainability in your design, they expect it.’

For designers, adapting to the needs and desires of each client and their lifestyle is fundamental, and for Njord, crafting the refitted interiors and exterior styling of Benetti’s 56m motor yacht GALAXY, showcases the studio’s strive to go above and beyond.

‘One thing that we love about that boat is that it’s actually a very sustainable refit,’ commented Colbon, as she tells us of the recycled nature of GALAXY’s mesmerising interior, ‘there are ways, even with a refit of that nature, for that yacht, that you can do some really clever smart things, without making any impact.’ The studio’s recent refit project, 61m explorer vessel CASSIUS, is yet another example of the studio’s work to reclaim.

For Njord, utilising recycled and eco-friendly materials throughout their designs showcases their ability to create unique, one-of-a-kind yacht interiors that are designed for the future: ‘we as a company are quite driven about inspiring and influencing change in that regard,’ added Colbon.

As interior designers, Colbon emphasises how Njord is an essential part of the wider team that are involved in making refits and builds more sustainable: ‘there’s other people [shipyards, naval architects, etc.] doing incredible things in this space, and we’re the interior component of that.’

With breathtaking, innovative designs, such as those seen onboard 56m GALAXY and 61m CASSIUS, we as an industry can look forward to the future of greener yacht interiors from Njord by Bergman Design House.
