As we look back on the superyacht industry over the last year, it is safe to say that there has been no shortage of inspiration amongst the world’s leading designers. Innovative new technologies and experimentation with functionality of vessels have been reoccurring themes in many of the designs, reflecting the topics discussed by industry leaders in Superyachts.com's upcoming Top100 documentary. Here, we share our top five coolest concepts of 2021…

120m SCINTILLA – TDoS

Tillberg Design of Sweden, the design studio behind 22m private residence yacht Somnio, unveiled a 120m world voyager concept aimed at offering ‘the ultimate world cruising experience’.

Designed in collaborations with DreamLiner Yachting and IYC, Scintilla was presented by TDoS and Laurent Giles Naval Architects as a new breed of adventurous world cruiser, combining luxury and sustainability in a ‘new wave’ offering.

Up to 36 guests can be accommodated in 18 spacious guest suites across the pool deck and heli deck levels, where the yacht embraces a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living. A multi-level owner’s suite takes up the aft portion of the bridge and heli decks, opening onto a private deck with Jacuzzi and infinity pool.

Scintilla’s design incorporates locally-sourced and eco-conscious materials throughout the interior and exterior spaces, while Laurent Giles has devised hybrid engines in addition to a combination battery and alternative fuel system.

300m EARTH 300 – Iddes Yachts

“We’re going to make science sexy,” Ivan Salas Jefferson, Founder of Iddes Yachts, told Superyachts.com on the launch of this staggering project.

Iddes Yachts teamed up with global environmental organization Earth 300 to create a statement concept with the aim of inspiring those individuals capable of making real change. Not only would Earth 300 become easily the largest superyacht ever built, but it would provide a cutting-edge platform for scientists, world-leaders and decision-makers to conduct vital research missions.

“We’re going to spread to world and take ocean conservation where no one has been before,” added Ivan Salas Jefferson.

Such a futuristic concept may well become a reality, with Earth 300 in the process of acquiring RINA Approval in Principle, while world-leading tech firm IBM has partnered with the project to provide high-performance computing.

80m COMETE – A Group

In an exclusive video produced by Superyachts.com, The A Group released its revolutionary superyacht concept - Comete. This fully developed 80m superyacht concept encapsulates all of the contradictory elements of a modern yacht design into one against-the-grain package.

Comete is the result of innovation and attention in-line with the evolving way in which guests are using their yachts. The concept was first brought to life by Thibaud Le Merdy, who was awarded Designer of the Year for Comete, before joining the design team at The A Group. “I wanted to go away from the traditional superstructure, to link the hull and superstructure together,” said Thibaud. “I would say it’s fresh. It’s a fresh boat.”

Cutting-edge CGI by Mirage CG offers a virtual journey through Comete’s avant-garde layout and sleek design. Thibaud Le Merdy’s initial vision is closer and closer to becoming a reality.

90m KAIROS – Oceanco

The game-changing concept Kairos was fruit of a first-time collaboration between Oceanco and Italian design studio Pininfarina.

Kairos has been developed on Oceanco’s NXT platform of sustainability and innovation, aiming to advance the onboard experience and connectivity with the sea to new extremes. The advanced technical design and engineering has been the work of Lateral Naval Architects, with the use of an innovative battery-powered E-Hybrid propulsion system.

KAIROS is a remarkable vision shared by three passionate, forward-thinking partners: Pininfarina, Lateral and Oceanco,” said Marcel Onkenhout, Oceanco CEO. “When Owners see the Oceanco NXT endorsement on a yacht’s design, they know they can expect elevated standards of life onboard that are in tune with new perspectives on sustainability and lifestyle.”

96m ZeRo – Sam Sorgiovanni

At the Monaco Yacht Show 2021, award-winning Australia designer Sam Sorgiovanni unveiled the futuristic hydrogen-powered superyacht concept, ZeRo.

ZeRo embraces the future not only in her sustainable propulsion system, but also in her breath-taking aesthetic. The sleek and elegant exterior profile features a restrained superstructure to allow for plenty of outdoor space for guests to enjoy time under the sun, including an expansive beach club and pool.

The hydrogen propulsion system eliminates carbon emissions without sacrificing any aspect of performance or comfort.
