U-Boat Worx Unveils Bold New Strategy with Super Sub Launch

By Nora Hart

U-Boat Worx, the world’s leading manufacturer of manned submersibles, has announced an exciting new direction with the launch of their high-speed Super Sub and the formation of three specialised divisions: UBW Exploration, UBW Components, and UBW Naval. This strategic shift aims to sharpen focus, boost innovation, and extend the company’s reach across tourism, industry, and defence.

Wilbert Versteeg, newly appointed CEO, brings over 30 years of maritime experience and a clear ambition: ‘My mission is to make U-Boat Worx the most accessible, innovative, and operationally reliable submersible company in the world. We will lead with excellence, and we will deliver with precision.’

UBW Exploration continues to design the iconic submersibles that put U-Boat Worx on the map, ranging from compact personal subs to group-tourism models like the Cruise Sub and the new Super Sub. A fresh wet-lease programme now allows clients to charter subs complete with crew and support, making deep-sea access easier than ever for cruise lines, resorts, and researchers.

UBW Components will offer cutting-edge subsea tech, batteries, thrusters, lighting, control systems, originally developed for U-Boat Worx vessels, now available to other operators and OEMs. Meanwhile, UBW Naval enters the defence arena with mission-ready underwater platforms designed for surveillance, infrastructure protection, and rapid response, crewed or uncrewed.

Since their founding in 2005 in the Netherlands, U-Boat Worx has delivered over 60 submersibles, more than any other manufacturer. They also trained the most certified submarine pilots, pioneered key technologies like lithium-ion batteries and wireless control systems, and built a spotless safety record.

With ocean access in growing demand, from adventure tourism to national exploration, U-Boat Worx is doubling down on what they do best: building state-of-the-art subs, entirely in-house, to the highest standards. The mission is clear: make the ocean more accessible, more sustainable, and more extraordinary, for everyone.
