What to do in Antigua & Barbuda During the Charter Yacht Show
With the winter season currently underway, a plethora of superyachts are already resting in the warm waters of the Caribbean, chasing the sun and the warm waters away from Europe’s cooler winter months. But what Caribbean destination stands out amongst the rest? Lying in the eastern waters of the archipelago is the beautiful twin paradise of Antigua and Barbuda.
Renowned for its 365 breathtaking beaches, safe cruising waters, and welcoming community, Antigua & Barbuda attracts superyachts from all over the world to pass the winter months. Not only showcased as the ultimate Caribbean yachting destination due to its handy location and picture-perfect scenery, the island is home to several yachting marinas which offer the perfect sanctuary for owners, charterers, brokers and crew alike.
From Falmouth Harbour to English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua provides first-class facilities and amenities for those seeking supplies and support after a long Atlantic crossing.
Notably, one standout attraction for superyachts, crew and their brokers is the annual Antigua Charter Yacht Show, which takes place over one week every December. Currently in full swing having started on the 4th of December, the 62nd edition of the show has already recorded attendance of over 70 superyachts, and hundreds of captains, brokers and industry professionals. As a predominantly business-to-business show, taking place in the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson's Dockyard, the show offers a magnificent location for networking and a breadth of opportunities for brokers and captains. However, a week in Antigua calls for more than just work.
Brimming with incredible activities and experiences across the island, it is safe to say that Antigua and Barbuda offers everything and more to those looking for a taste of luxury.
Starting north of Antigua, the capital of St. Johns provides a haven of authentic island culture. From daily markets to delicious fresh-food restaurants and vibrant local shops and boutiques, this town allows for a true appreciation of the Antiguan island lifestyle. If opting for a more quiet retreat, also situated on the north of the island is the breathtaking Hodges Bay. Popular for its impressive art collection, luxury spa and beautiful pools and outdoor lounge areas, this five-star resort is a luxury oasis bordered by its very own private beach. Not only that, but Hodges Bay boasts a private mini island, named Prickly Pear Island, which offers visitors a chance to relax in complete solitude just a ten-minute boat ride from the island’s main shores.
Heading east along Antigua’s coastline, visitors can discover the remarkable experience of Sting Ray City. Offering a spectacular chance to swim with some of the deadliest fish in the ocean, this experience is simply a must when visiting Antigua. After raising heart rates in the water, guests can continue an adventurous day out at Nonsuch Bay. Recognised for being the best location in Antigua for kitesurfing, this picturesque bay offers great watersports waters, before visitors can head inland to treat their growing appetite at Rokuni, a mesmerising Asian-inspired fine-dining restaurant ideal for long-breezy afternoons in the sun or chic, romantic evenings.
If hiking is more your thing, the southern side of the island offers beautiful hiking landscapes at Solider Point and Hudson Point, with the island’s Fort Willaim also providing astounding views across Willoughby Bay. Likewise, the Blockhouse and Shirley Heights Lookout supply the famous Antigua views across English and Falmouth Harbour. An icon in itself, Shirley Heights’ famed Sunday night parties are unmissable; a true display of Antiguan culture, both a favourite with the locals and the tourists, the party is the perfect crowd to meet new people and make friends for life. According to the Tourism Authority, ‘it will be a night you will never forget.’
Heading west along the coastline, visitors should stumble upon the lavish five-star resort of Carlisle Bay. Boasting a plethora of restaurants, a spa, tennis courts, a beachside yoga pavilion and plenty more, a complete sanctuary can be found in this luxury resort. Heading further east of the island lies easily the most beautiful stretch of waters in the Caribbean. The bay of Jolly Beach is home to some of the most turquoise, glass-like waters: a stunning backdrop for a day of exploring at sea. It is no surprise that the famed fine-dining restaurant of Sheer Rocks takes its spot here: an exquisite place to indulge and bask in beautiful views.
Five Islands Harbour, east of Jolly Beach, is also a must-visit location on any guest's bucket list. Home to spectacular waters, the luxury resort of Hermitage Bay and the fun experience of swimming with pigs at Pigs in Paradise, this harbour offers respite from a busy business schedule.
It is not just by the coast that Antigua offers an adventure. The Antiguan rainforest allows guests to immerse themselves in nature at height with the Antigua rainforest ziplining and canopy tour, or visitors can take to a buggy to traverse the island’s hilly landscapes at speed.
Of course, for those spending longer in Antigua during the charter show, the sister island of Barbuda provides the epitome of all Caribbean escapes. Just a short helicopter ride away lies the home of the only Nobu in the Caribbean, the stunning brand new Barbuda Ocean Club, a development from the Discovery Land company, and the unique Pink Sand Beach and breathtaking Princess Diana Beach.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the show, it is clear that Antigua & Barbuda offers a plethora of experiences for one to enjoy. Make the most of your trip and discover the twin island paradise from a new perspective.
