Ree Crew

  • James Benson
Captain James Benson welcomes you aboard S/Y Ree and is eager to show you how beautifully this elegant yacht performs under sail. James has been a professional Captain for over twenty years, and in that time has logged over 170,000 nautical miles. Previous to running Ree, James has worked as Captain on some of the busiest charter yachts afloat, including Mirabella III, Kalikobass II, Sweptaway, Persistence and Desirade among others. James has been sailing since he was six years old. As a teenager in his native England, he raced dinghies and windsurfers, spending every moment possible on the inland lakes of Yorkshire and the Lake District. After completing university, he headed south to the English Channel for his first taste of offshore sailing. He was, of course, immediately entranced and soon qualified as a professional. He qualified for his Yachtmaster Ocean license at the age of 21. James has skippered both private and charter vessels ranging in length from 59 to 145 feet. Having sailed extensively in both the Caribbean and Mediterranean, he takes great pleasure in sharing with guests, his knowledge and appreciation of these spectacular cruising areas. Whether lively harbours or quiet coves are desired, he knows where the best ones are. James enjoys all water sports and when time ashore permits, he is a very competitive tennis player. He is an avid reader, and in addition to English, speaks fluent French and some Italian.
