MIASF CEO Phil Purcell on The Success of FLIBS 2020

The decision to go ahead with the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of last month was regarded with some skepticism by more than a few of us in the yachting industry. After successive cancellations of major global yacht shows, it seemed impossible that FLIBS - which ordinarily takes place across seven venues and attracts over 100,000 visitors each year - would be able to go ahead with the necessary safety and distancing measures in place. But the show did indeed go on, and without a hitch. We spoke to Phil Purcell, CEO/President of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, to discuss what exactly this year’s FLIBS looked like, its significance to local industry and economy, and its potential impact on the future of yachting events.

METSTRADE Cancelled for First Time in 32 Years

An announcement was issued this morning by RAI Amsterdam that the Marine Equipment Trade Show, or METSTRADE, has been cancelled for the first time in 32 years. Due to the ongoing global uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the world’s largest marine trade exhibition, which sees shipbuilders, marinas and suppliers gather in the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, will not be going ahead as planned on 17-19 November.

What Next as Cannes Yachting Festival 2020 Cancelled?

The 2020 Cannes Yachting Festival has been cancelled after the organisers of the show were denied prefectural dispensation. With Cannes becoming the latest major yachting event to succumb to the effects of Covid-19, attention is now shifting to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October and whether that will go ahead as currently planned.
