A Look at the Largest Vessels of all Time as of 2024

By Frances Flannagan

As of 2024, the largest superyachts of all time remarkably range from 180.6m to 90m; a glowing representation of the pioneering and innovative nature of the superyacht industry. We take a look at the five largest vessels that have ever been built, each one representing the exceptional engineering, design and technological wonders of the yachting world.

AZZAM - 180.6m

180.6m AZZAM was built in 2013 by leading-shipyard Lürssen. Since her inception, she has held the title of being the largest superyacht in the world. She features exterior styling by Nauta Yachts and interior design penned by Christophe Leoni.

She is a luxurious vessel that combines a timeless design with innovation, able to travel at over 30 knots. AZZAM breaks grounds in terms of dimensions, technology and performance, as well as her construction itself: she was built in just three years following one year of engineering, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship of the German yard, who notably have built the most Top 100 yachts in the world.

FULK AL SALAMAH - 164m

Custom-built by Mariotti Yachts in 2016, FULK AL SALAMAH is an incredible 164m yacht with exterior styling by Studio de Jorio and naval architecture overseen by the Italian yard.

Whilst not much information has been released about this vessel, we do know that she has a deck made of aluminium and teak and a steel and aluminium superstructure.

ECLIPSE - 162.5m

ECLIPSE was built in 2010 by Blohm + Voss, featuring interiors by Terence Disdale Design. Her unprecedented size ensured that her construction and features were kept tightly under wraps, although it is believed that 36 guests can be accommodated across 18 cabins, catering also for a staggering 70 crew members.

Thought to be featured on board is a three-man leisure submarine and two swimming pools, one of which being 16m long with an adjustable depth feature that allows it to be converted into a dance floor.

DUBAI - 162m

Launched in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, DUBAI is a stunning 162m vessel, her length disguised by the elegant lines of her steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Blohm + Voss oversaw her naval architecture, whilst Winch Design was responsible for her exteriors and Platinum Yachts for her interior design.

Her interiors are beautiful and intricate: a luxurious blend of bold colours with fine fabrics and detailed handmade mosaics. Her show-stopping feature is a spectacular staircase, a dramatic circular feature that has glass steps which change colour.

DUBAI has seven spacious decks, offering a split-level owners deck, a wealth of sunbathing areas and the ability to accommodate a helicopter and two 10m tenders.

As well as having a stunning design, DUBAI has excellent performance capabilities, able to reach 26 knots and a range of 8,500nm.

BLUE - 160m

160m BLUE was built in 2022 by Lürssen, featuring a contemporary exterior and fresh interior penned by Terence Disdale Design.

This yacht is as efficient as she is sustainable, breaking grounds in terms of eco-conscious design. BLUE is equipped with a Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed by Lürssen, alongside an Azimuth Pod Drive.

A second key innovation is her exhaust after-treatment system, acknowledged as a state-of-the-art piece of design. This leads to less noise and vibration as well as a reduction in nitrogen oxide levels. The wastewater treatment plant further showcases the ways in which BLUE has been developed with the future of yachting in mind: wastewater is able to be disposed of safely with new membrane technology.

Although not yet completed, a special mention must be made for REV OCEAN: a vessel currently under construction that is set to be the largest superyacht in the world. She is set to launch in 2025, the construction of this 194.9m yacht was put on hold for two years, with her build resuming in November 2023.

The mission behind REV OCEAN is to generate a new generation of ocean solutions and raise awareness of the global impacts on marine environment. She poses a once in a lifetime experience with regards to both research and charter, and holds the title of the world’s largest and most advanced research vessel.

As well as being set to change the course of oceanic research, REV OCEAN will be a once-in-a-lifetime charter opportunity for up to 28 guests. From discovering shipwrecks to creating movies of their onboard experiences in a media suite, this vessel is set to transform the superyacht industry as we know it.
