Oceanco’s Simply Custom: Transforming Custom Yacht Design

By Frances Flannagan

Since making waves in the superyacht scene back in 1987, Oceanco has consistently delivered an impressive array of cutting-edge superyachts. The unveiling of its latest philosophy, Simply Custom, stands as a testament to Oceanco's commitment to staying ahead in the industry. This collection not only showcases the brand's exceptional pedigree but also marks a significant new approach in custom yachts, delivering an unprecedented variety of choice from a single technical base.

As a result of today’s rapid pace of life, prospective owners looking to build custom yachts have shifted their priorities when it comes to the design process.

Oceanco has responded to the demands of time-poor owners , developing a way to build a custom yacht that guarantees the shipyard’s outstanding pedigree whilst streamlining the entire process. Not only does this result in yachts that perfectly reflect the owners’ desires, but it also allows for owners to spend their time making decisions on what matters to them most, with the flexibility of leaving the rest to the experts.

Reinforcing its presence in the 80m market, Oceanco has created a bold new proposition, created exclusively for the clientele: the Simply Custom range. This collection is set to evolve custom yacht building for a new generation, allowing owners to have the most enjoyable and enriching experience when creating their yachts.

The Simply Custom range offers a technical foundation that world-renowned superyacht designers can canvas upon to create a custom yacht tailored to the  exact desires of an owner.  It is the largest portfolio of yacht designs ever produced on a single technical foundation.

Oceanco has partnered with 16 design studios to enhance this intuitive customisation approach, with exteriors penned by long-established, award-winning designers as well as a new generation of creative talents. The studios include: Espen Oeino International, H2 Yacht Design, Winch Design, Harrison Eidsgaard, Hot Lab, Lobanov Design, Nuvolari Lenard, Oceanco, Pascoli International, Sorgiovanni Design, Taylor Design, Team For Design - Enrico Gobbi, The A Group, the Touch Studio, Vallicelli Design, Bozca Limitless Design.

Five interior design studios have also collaborated with Oceanco to enhance the inspiration of owners on their Simply Custom journey. These studio include: Dasha Moranova Designs, Njord by Bergman Design House, Nuvolari Lenard, Studio Laura Sessa and Zuretti Design.

Paris Baloumis, Marketing Director at Oceanco, commented: ‘We created Simply Custom because we saw that there was a growing demand to build custom yachts in a new way. Owners still want the very best quality in their yachts, and to have something designed and built just for them. But many have less desire to focus on every detail in the process. They expect to entrust technical matters to experts like Oceanco and our partners. And, perhaps most importantly, they want building a yacht to be simple and fun.’

The yachts in the range are offered from 80m in length, or 2,500 -  2,700 GT, and are typically configured with an owner’s stateroom and six guest suites. However, the flexible layout allows for additional suites, multipurpose lounges and wellness areas, to name but a few.
The technical experts at Oceanco worked alongside renowned architecture studio Lateral Naval Architects to develop a technical package that allows for customisation, whilst also being simple to understand, implement and offer solutions tailored to lifestyle needs.

‘Our Simply Custom collaboration focused on creating a foundation that reflects the current operational and lifestyle demands of yachts in this size bracket,’ explained James Roy, Managing Director at Lateral Naval Architects. 'The process of customising every little detail on a yacht can be hugely rewarding for those with a passion for it, but some owners look to us, as experienced practitioners in this field, to help streamline the process. As a smart person once put it, everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler. The Simply Custom yachts themselves are still complex, beautiful machines, but we wanted to make the experience of building them as enjoyable as possible for the client.’

The yachts meet the industry’s demand for more eco-conscious vessels through a state-of-the-art, all-electrical propulsion system, whilst also featuring variable-speed generators, with a  high fuel efficiency that are  capable of running on low-carbon biodiesel fuels.

The customisation aspect has not impacted the overall performance capabilities of the yachts however, as they boast a maintainable top speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 5,000nm. Comfort onboard is guaranteed, with exceptional low noise, vibration and safekeeping standards.

Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco, shared : ‘Custom building is a core part of our DNA; we will always create yachts that are uniquely tailored to each owner. And we see Simply Custom as a logical development for Oceanco, sitting alongside our fully custom yachts and Life Cycle Support refit service, which will always be a part of our offering. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have experienced a definite appetite for this new approach to buying an Oceanco in an approachable, fun and streamlined way.’

By seamlessly combining unmatched customization options with technical prowess, Oceanco is poised to redefine the way we consider large custom yacht building. Embracing an inclusive, powerful and thoroughly modern approach, Oceanco invites you to step into the next era of convenience, comfort and boundless possibilities.
